There are a few reasons why a dog licks.

A dog’s saliva contains a healing agent and dogs often lick another’s wounds in an attempt to heel them.

Dogs will also lick as a way to show submission. A submissive dog will hold himself very low, slinking himself down to try and make himself appear smaller. He will approach a human with his head lowered and his hears slightly back as if to say, you’re my boss.

Some dogs will lick another in a dominant manner. For example mother dogs lick and groom their puppies and for the pups it is the mother displaying leadership. Mom says stay here and be groomed because she is alpha over them and she says so. Submissive licking and dominance licking have different body languages. A dominant dog will carry himself high and proud. He approaches things with an air of confidence. He may also be very persistent as to what he wants.

Sometimes dog’s lick out of obsession. Dog’s who lick others in an obsessive or dominant manner need to be corrected and the dog must be told not to lick.

Summer is a good opportunity to spend quality time with your family and pets. However, summers can be dangerous for your pet especially if you have a dog at home. In summers, your animal friend could suffer from problems like sun burn, dehydration and stroke. Therefore, it is important that you take special care of your pet during summers.

Make sure you give your companion with plenty of fresh water to keep your pet hydrated during summers. Provide your pet with a bowl of fresh clean water both outside and inside your house. If you are planning to take your dog for a long walk or for any other outdoor activity, make sure you carry water for your companion. When you take your pet outdoors make sure you check for signs of dehydration. Some of the signs of dehydration in dogs include lethargy, loss of skin elasticity, lethargy and sunken eyes.

Avoid leaving your dog in the car in summers as it can get very hot quickly. Even if you go out for a few minutes, take your pet with you. The car can be too hot for your pet even after you have rolled down the windows. At times, the heat in the car can cause sun stroke. If you cannot take your dog along with you, it is a good idea that you leave them at home rather them leaving them unattended in your car.

Most people are under the impression that all dogs can swim which is not true. If you are planning to take your animal companion for a walk near the pool, make sure you supervise them. If you have a pool at home, make sure you put a fence around the pool.

It is common for dogs to suffer from the problem of ticks and fleas during summers. To protect your pet from getting them, you must talk to your vet. Your pet may suggest products that you must apply at least once a month. Avoid using over-the-counter products as not all products are safe.

During summers, your dog is more likely to suffer from heartworm disease. This disease is usually carried by mosquitoes and could cause death of your pet if not treated on time. If you suspect that your pet is suffering from heartworm disease, take them to your vet immediately.

Pet care has advanced a lot in recent years, in all areas, including dog beds. Some of the biggest and most valuable advantages have come in memory foam. Once only available to the richer dog owners, memory foam dog beds have now come down a bunch in price. But what is it that makes memory foam beds such a super buy? It’s so much more than the price.

What is memory foam?

Memory foam is visco-elastic polyurethane, which reacts with the heat of the dog’s body to form itself to all the dog’s curves. There is an
assortment of grades in firmness and support available. It is soft and supple and easily molds but then it retains its shape, giving extra support that no other pet mattresses offer. The technology has been used for a while now in human mattresses and so now pet owners are able to give their pet the same benefits.

All shapes and sizes of beds can be made, so regardless the size of your dog and whatever position they like to sleep in, there is a foam dog bed on hand to meet that need. Also, they can be found in a full range of cover designs.

Health benefits

These dog beds are not only soft and comfortable; they offer all the support that any dog could need. Whatsoever the size, weight or age of your dog, this technology allows for the total support of every joint and muscle.

If your dog suffers from joint problems or arthritis, this is a particularly good choice particularly for older dogs suffering from arthritis and other conditions. Vets often recommend orthopedic dog beds made of this foam for dogs that have orthopedic problems, because of the first-rate support they offer. Working dogs also benefit from the support of memory foam dog beds to rest their weary muscles and give them time to repair before the next busy day.

The memory foam takes the pressure off joints and muscles and so can be beneficial in reducing pain for your dog, even if your dog suffers from a condition like hip dysplasia. The spines of large dogs can be allowed to sag and distort when not supported by memory foam technology.

The excellent support that these beds afford also facilitates better blood circulation. With their weight evenly distributed by the foam, your dog has the best chance of a peaceful night’s sleep, especially as they will not be tossing and turning, trying to get comfortable. From our own experience, everyone knows how frustrating that can be when all you want to do is sleep.

Finally, memory foam dog beds are breathable, which means they will keep your dog warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather. That is better for their health and also helps them sleep better.

Economic benefits

It used to be considered that these dog beds were relatively expensive. But with the old laws of supply and demand, prices have fallen, making them a fantastic buy. They may cost a little more initially but they are extremely durable, which may be particularly important if you have a large dog or one who chews a lot.

In addition, memory foam dog beds can be machine washed or easily washed by hand. They should last for years, whereas cheaper alternatives surely will not. Some can also be machine dried.

So, whatsoever your budget, it makes sense to look at this type of dog beds. They meet all your pet’s needs; they are available in any style you could wish for, and they will last for years to come.

Kennel cough is described as the inflammation of your pet’s respiratory system, more particularly the upper part of the lungs. Kennel cough is very common in dog centers, especially in crowded shelters.
This disease is airborne, meaning dogs living within the same area are at high risks of acquiring it. Kennel cough is a highly contagious disease and it is very similar to human cough.

If you suspect that your dog has kennel cough, take it to the vet right away. It always pays to be sure whether your dog just has a mild case of cough or a more complicated respiratory disease. The vet would perform the necessary diagnosis for your pet and he can give your dog the medicines that it need.

But aside from following the vet’s orders, you also have to do several things to speed up your pet’s recovery. Milder cases of kennel cough rarely require medication. But it is still necessary to give your pet the drugs that the vet had prescribed. Antibiotics are usually prescribed to dogs with kennel cough. And they have to take it as frequently as indicated in order to experience eventual relief from the disease.

If your dog has kennel cough, try to keep it away from your other pets as much as possible. All of them could easily contract the same disease just with mere association. If you must, keep your pets in their respective cages. This way, you can prevent their contact with each other. There are also preventive medicines that you can give to your other pets so that they would have stronger immune system. This way, they won’t easily acquire the disease. Ask your vet about the possible vaccines against kennel cough.

The best home remedy to give dogs with kennel cough is Vitamin C. There are Vitamin C soft capsules that can be bought at pharmacies today and you can simply add it to your dog’s meals. Break the capsule and put the content in the food of your dog. It is also possible to use similar tinctures and herbal remedies that are easily available at pharmacies today.

The cold weather can make your dog suffer from the disease even more. Try to keep its environment warm and humid. Use a vaporizer or a home humidifier to keep the dog house or crate comfortable enough for your sick pet. It is also possible to use a cough medicine used for children on your dog.

However, this should be done only as a first aid and never as a continued medication for its disease.

Honey can help so much in easing an irritated throat. You should also do your best to keep your pet from pollutants such as smoke. For the entire length of time that your dog is sick, try to keep smokers out of the house. This way, your pet would experience speedy recover from its condition.

Be sure to monitor your pet’s health all the time. This is very important so you can stop the onset of any diseases. Prevention and early cure are your best defenses against kennel cough and similar health concern.

Dog care is an essential part of a dog’s life. If not properly attended, they may acquire certain diseases that are undisputedly shortening their lives. Some of these may include diabetes, tumors, liver cancer, kidney diseases, joint pains, obesity, and many dental problems. In these, it is very important that you manage your senior dog’s health through ensuring necessary dog care.

Senior dog ailments may be controlled if preventive dog care measures are observed. Dog care routines must include vitamin supplements, regular visits to the veterinarian, nutrition checks, and a regimen of exercises. When your concern is the infestation of fleas on your pet’s coat, it is not always recommendable that you employ the use of poison powders or sprays. It commonly observed that flea combs work well in eliminating the fleas on your pets, not to mention the enjoyment your dog gets with this form of dog care.

However, there is now a popular medication available in the market, which your veterinarian may recommend. This is called the Program, which in general may prove worth the use. On the other side, maintaining the cleanliness of your home may be one of the best ways of eliminating these pests. A vacuum once every two days will keep them off fr many days. Moreover, dog care may apply also with your yard, meaning the use of pesticides sprayed throughout your yard may prove beneficial for you and your pet. Pesticides which come in liquid forms such as the malathion, duisban and the likes are most commonly applied as they not only reduce the number of fleas in your place but also kill other pests as well.

Ultimately, dog care reduces the chance of your dog having acquired diseases, some of which may be fatal. An example is the heartworms. They are known to kill many dogs and it is best if you have your dog checked by a veterinarian every year to give him corresponding medications. Vaccinations as part of your dog care routine would significantly affect his over-all health. Your dog’s diet must also be watched. Many generic and commercially produced dog foods may contain harmful ingredients to your dog. To carefully ensure productive diet for your dog, it is best that you give him foods that are scientifically formulated.
