There are many things that you need to think about when you are bringing a dog into your home. One of the most important things to think about is the type of food that is going to be best for your dog. Many dogs do well on many different types of foods, so you’ll want to do your research and decide what the best type of food for your particular dog is going to be.

It is important to look at the ingredients of the food, when you are choosing a brand of food. Don’t be distracted by fancy packaging, or by what the food says on the front. Everything that you need to know about the food can be found in the ingredient listings. First of all, you want to look at foods that list real meats and vegetables as their number one ingredients. Remember that with dog foods, ingredients are listed by what occurs the most often in the food, so the first thing listed is going to be the biggest ingredient. You want to look for a food that has real meat listed first – followed by real vegetables. Meats that have “meal” listed after them should really be avoided, as these might be any type of by product from the meat, and might not be what you are looking for at all. Also, any by products or chemicals are not what you want to find in foods.

After you have chosen a brand, you need to decide which type of food from that brand will be best for your dog. You have two main choices – canned food, which is usually wet or dry food. It is important to know that a well balanced diet should really include some of both. Dogs need dry food because it helps them to keep their teeth clean, and the wet food can often be more full of nutrients than the dry food. However, you can choose the type of meal that works best for you.

If a dog is fed wet food, the dog should not free feed on the wet food, because it cannot be left out that long, or it will spoil. Therefore, something that you want to do is make sure that you feed the wet food on a type of a schedule. If you are only feeding wet food, you’ll want to feed your dog twice a day. You can feed him more often if you feed him smaller meals, but be sure that you stay on a schedule because your dog will come to depend on that schedule and won’t want to change it. If you feed your dog dry food, he can free feed, but only if he doesn’t eat too much. If you allow him to free feed and he eats too much food, he can easily gain weight and become unhealthy.

First we need to recognize that nutrients are not the same thing as ingredients. It’s not the combination of ingredients that determines the quality of your dog’s diet and whether or not the dog’s nutritional needs are being met, it’s the blend of nutrients. The ingredients in dog food only have to do with digestibility and palatability. A given dog food can contain certain ingredients that have no nutritional value or that can’t be digested by your dog. You can find two different dog foods that may both seem to nutritious, but one may have ingredients that are better for your specific breed of dog. You should discuss your dog’s nutritional requirements with your vet in order to select a diet that provides everything needed.

Healthy feeding habits should start as soon as you bring your dog home! Your dog’s diet influences such things as health status, appearance, development and attitude. The way you feed your dog will affect certain behavioral aspects like, potty training and begging. When your dog is a puppy, it is very important to prevent it from gaining a lot of weight, which may contribute to the likelihood of obesity and its related health problems as they age.

Your dogs nutrition is critical for leading a long, healthy and happy life. There are so many different types of dog foods available to you that it is sometimes difficult to determine which one is the right one for your dog. Just because a dog food is expensive, does not always mean it is the best food for your dog.

IMPORTANT One thing that is critical to the health of your dog is to know what NEVER to feed him. Some foods that humans can eat can be hazardous or even fatal to dogs. Some of these foods you need to avoid are: alcohol, baby food that contains onion powder, bones from fish, cat food (too high in protein), chocolate, coffee or tea, grapes or raisons, citrus oil extracts, onions, garlic, table scraps, mushrooms and more. Some of these are toxic and could cause death, whereas some will cause less severe health issues, such as diarrhea and vomiting.

When you buy food for your dog, its easy to be overwhelmed by all the choices you have, and on top of that you have to worry about all the negative things you hear and read about commercial dog food products. This has left many dog owners confused and stuck when it comes to picking a good diet for their pets, and it makes them wonder about the perfect healthy diet for their furry family members… is there one?

Is it as simply as knowing what should go into your dog? Yes it is, and it’s nutrients. A dog needs a mix of protein, carbohydrates, good fat, vitamins, minerals and water. You can check this on the label of a dog food product or you can make the meal right at home on your own. As long as your dog is getting these important nutrients, its close to the safe side.
